In keeping with the philosophy of providing a quality, competitive
swimming program for young athletes of all ages, abilities, and
levels of interest, SRVLA offers several levels of professional
instruction and training.
The Pre-Novice Group
is for the brand new young swimmer with no swimming experience, but
is water safe. It is designed to start young swimmers into the
sport of swimming while allowing maximum opportunity to participate
in other activities.
Emphasis is on helping to make the young swimmer more comfortable
in the water and teaching the fundamentals of swimming. The coach
is in the water with these young swimmers. These swimmers only swim
in the warmer months.
The Novice Levels 1 & 2 are for
the young new swimmer with limited swimming experience who can swim
one lap of freestyle across the pool. It is designed to start young
swimmers into the sport of swimming while allowing maximum
opportunity to participate in other activities. Emphasis is on helping to make
the young swimmer more comfortable in the water and teaching the
fundamentals of swimming.
The Novice Levels 3 & 4
are for the beginning swimmer with some swimming experience. It is designed to start
young swimmers into the sport of swimming while allowing maximum

fundamentals of the four strokes by means of drills and games that
make swimming fun.
The Competitive Levels 1 & 2
are for swimmers with knowledge of all legal strokes and turns and
are ready to learn more advanced stroke techniques. The objective of these groups is
to improve their technique and conditioning. Swimmers are still encouraged to
participate in other activities.
Junior Varsity /
Varsity groups are for swimmers who have a
basic knowledge of all four competitive strokes and would like to
improve their swimming skills. Practices focus on correct stroke
technique drills, endurance exercises, and team development. A
positive attitude and sportsmanship are emphasized. Dryland
training consists of moderate calisthenics and stretching.
These groups are intended for swimmers and families that want a
less demanding and less competitive swim schedule. The
emphasis is for these young people to develope swimming as a life
skill and to keep fitness levels up while pursuing other activities
The Pre-Senior Group
is a transitional level in which swimmers move to competitive
objective of the group is to learn the fine points of competitive
swimming: short and long term goal setting and race
work with individual swimmers to set personal goals. Cross training is also part of
their daily practice.
The Senior Group
continues the emphasis of competitive training strategies started
in the Pre-Senior group. The athletes have varied personal
goals, and training is designed around those goals in a
team-structured environment, all the while working to develop
swimmers to their maximum potential.
Parent Involvement and Social
- The Team could not function without the volunteer effort of the
parents. Other than paying the bills each month, there are many
jobs that need to be done and fun events to attend.
- The Annual General Membership Meeting is held in October to
vote on the new budget, new board member, changes to the by-Laws,
and other items effecting the team.
- The Awards Banquet is held in the fall to recognize the
accomplishments for the previous year. Details are in the
newsletter as well as a separate notice.
- Swim Meets last all day, weekend, or several days. A Lot of
time is spent waiting for your child to swim. This is an excellent
opportunity to become better acquainted with other parents and
learn about the club and swimming in general. Each team is expected
to have parents who will officiate- if you have an interest in this
important function, please speak with the coach. They will let an
official know that you are interested or have questions.
- In addition to officials, each team is expected to provide
timers during the meet. All parents are expected to spend 1-2
hours each day timing so this burden is shared fairly and evenly
amongst all team families. This is an excellent time to become
better acquainted with other families.
- Parents are needed to serve on the Board. Most terms are for
two years. The positions are described elsewhere. If you have an
interest, talk to any Board member.
- SRVLA run swim meets require the effort of all team families.
These are an excellent source of income for the team. Each family
will be contacted prior to the meet with more information. This
effort usually involves time working during the meet, and a food
donation, which will be used at the snack bar during the meet.
- Each year a party is held for the parents in the home of one of
the families. Invitations will be sent for this event.
- Swimming is a way of life for the swimmer as well as for the
family. Enjoy your child and the environment he/she is a part of,
it’s one of the healthiest around!
Just what makes SRVLA a great swim team? It’s the kids, the
coaches, the fun, hard work, dedication and a wonderful group of
parents who put forth a great deal of effort, time and commitment
to support a sport that truly benefits their child’s whole

let this intimidate you! Swimming is one of the greatest sports to
